The therapy with ultrasound is an emerging field in medical research. Especially the non invasive and local tissue ablation with high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU, FUS = focused ultrasound surgery) has a great chance to be established in clinical routine for the treatment of prostate cancer and uterine myoma. Other entities, such as bone tumors, Brain disorders, or the ablation of liver- and kidney tumors are investigated in clinical studies. Diagnostic ultrasound (USgFUS) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRgFUS) are used to guide and monitor this noninvasive therapy.
However, ultrasound has a manifold higher therapeutic potential. Due to its ability to induce thermal and non thermal tissue effects ultrasound can be used e.g. for vascular occlusion, drug delivery, blood-brain barrier disruption or sonothrombolysis.
Recent mediri work focuses on projects to improve MRgFUS treatment of moving abdominal organs such as liver or kidney by US-motion tracking.
The mediri team has over 20 years of experience in therapeutic ultrasound research. An excerpt of our expertise is listed aside:
